Wesley Moon "New York–based interior designer" has made a name for himself creating layered, chic interiors that make use of every inch of space. It’s the thought-provoking way he hides essential home electronics and everyday appliances, though, that takes his design-savvy to a new level. “When I look at a new space, I try to think of how it would look without wires for the cable box or a metal range hood. That really informs my choices,” says Moon, who has incorporated many of his ideas in his own home. “The solution is usually custom-made pieces that can fit each element in seamlessly. This ensures that I can keep the integrity of my overall design while still incorporating the functionality of what needs to be hidden.” Here, Moon shares his creative tips for disguising everyday objects.
Pet accessories
“There are cheesy ready-made options on the market, but if you are doing a renovation, and you have pets, it’s a good idea to consider where you are putting the food bowls and bed,” says Moon. “To hide the bowls, I’ll use a custom drawer in the bottom of a kitchen base cabinet. The bowls are hidden, but they can’t be pushed around the floor or turned over either.”
Kitchen appliances
One of Moon’s favorite items to conceal is the range hood. “Sometimes you just want to see a cabinet over the cooktop, and now there are very nice options that allow you to avoid a chunky range hood if you want a more contemporary look. Using integrated appliances allows the focus of the room to be on the cabinetry, countertops, or backsplash instead of the dishwasher,” he says.
Electronics
“In the past, I designed end tables for either side of the living room sofa to house the audio-visual equipment, speakers, and their accompanying wires,” says Moon. “You can fit a lot in two small tables.” He has also devised bookcases that sit on the same wall as the television. “To make them more interesting than a standard cabinet with shelves, I created lacquered boxes that sit inside the shelves to house the cable box and other equipment to save space.”
